Poetry is one of the important elements of Arabic literature. Even before the rise of Islam, the Arabs were famous for their prowess in producing beautiful Arabic poetry. Poetry also carries various messages and values which are very useful in the life of Arab society. Looking at the importance of Arabic poetry, an individual named al-Mufaddal al-Dabbi was asked by the Caliph Abu Ja’far al-Mansur to select the best Arabic poems and compile them as a syllabus in order to educate his son, al-Mahdi, who would be the successor of the Abbasid Dynasty. Thus, all literary texts found in the anthology of al-Mufaddalliyyat are the best poems in regards of their meaning. This article will discuss the content of al-Mufaddalliyyat in general.
