Abstract

This paper aims to firstly examine the content of syllabus in the subject of Ethics and Moral for higher education institutions. Secondly, it will identify the objectives of Islamic law (Maqasid Syariah) as underlying foundations of value-laden education. Maqasid Syariah is divided into three parts, Dharuriyyat (necessities) Hajiyyat (needs: facilitating and easiness) and Tahsiniyyat (embellishment: perfection). Finally, it will propose an infusion of those foundations into ethics and moral education. It is a matter of fact that ethics and moral subject matter play a very crucial role in developing personality and self-identity among students at higher institutions because it can help in solving moral problems and enhancing their personality development. However, to what extent that the students are aware of and practice what they have learned in the subject of Ethics and Moral education in classroom? They should do not study the subject for the sake of getting good result in their examination, but also for shaping good behaviours, manners and attitudes in their daily lives. Therefore, some proper values should be infused into ethics and moral education at all level of schooling including higher education. This study is conceptual and fundamental. Hence, by using qualitative method which is analytical, a set of ethical values and principles based on the objectives of Maqasid Syariah that is the preservation of five essentials namely religion, life, property, progeny and intellect are elucidated. This study gives some implications on the content of ethics and moral subject matter which should be integrated accordingly with these five essentials of Islamic law.
