Abstract

A few decades ago, Malaysian economy was seriously depending on primary commodities such as tin, rubber, palm oil and petroleum products. However, after the severe economic recession that hit most of the Asian, government has identified tourism as a prospective industry which has made a meteoric rise and become an important contributor to the Malaysian economy. Same as worldwide, tourism industry in Malaysia also has been faced with several challenges. However, due to the promotional activities organised by Tourism Malaysia, the growth of Malaysian tourism has grown rapidly compared to its neighbours in the ASEAN region. The target in the Tenth Malaysia Plan is to attract a large share of high-spending travellers and capturing a higher share of high-growth segments mostly from Russia, China, India and the Middle East. In order to achieve this target, a few main strategies have been highlighted in the Tenth Malaysia Plan 2011-2015.
