Abstract

Prison environment played an important role to improve inmates’ quality of life and health conditions. Although there were studies that postulated prison environment had an influence on inmates’ quality of life, however, there were lack of studies that examined relationships among prison environment, quality of life and health status simultaneously, especially using Maqasid syariah quality of life approach. In general, it was reported that majority of drug abuse inmates’ health status was lower compared to the general community because of the living environment in the prison. In addition, it was noted that after they were released from prisons, most inmates faced difficulty to reintegrate into the community and getting employment leading to the deterioration of their quality of life. Generally, the aim of the study was to identify factors that could improve drug abuse inmates’ health status. Specifically, the study empirically examined the effects of prison environment on inmates’ health status. In addition, this study examined the mediating role of Maqasid Syariah quality of life, encompassing religion, life, mind, lineage and property, on the relationship between prison environment and health status among drug abuse inmates. Self-administered questionnaires were distributed to drug abuse inmates at several prisons in Malaysia identified using area sampling representing north, south, central and east region. The selection of the respondents was conducted using simple random sampling method. The instrument comprised of four major sections measuring prison environment, Maqasid syariah quality of life and health status. The last part of the questionnaire captured the respondents’ profile. The proposed model and research hypotheses were tested using Path Analysis in structural equation modelling (SEM). The findings of the study would provide insightful information pertaining to the different aspects of prison environment and Maqasid syariah quality of life that would improve the drug abuse inmate health status.
