Abstract

This study corresponds to the rising need of understanding the effectiveness of play as a vital medium in teaching and learning process and particularly in developing prosocial behavior among preschool children. The main objective of this study is to examine teachers' understanding and awareness on the effectiveness of play in developing prosocial behavior among preschool children. Semi structured interviews ere carried out on two teachers of Pra Sekolah Al Falah, Institut Perguruan Kuala Terengganu. The findings of the study showed that there was a difference between teachers' view on play and time allocation for play in developing prosocial behavior among preschool children. In addition the teachers aware and agreed upon their roles in using play as a medium to develop prosocial behavior among preschool children. Preschool's teachers under Bahagian Pendidikan Guru, Ministry of Education use play as one of the teaching approaches as young children learn through play. Teachers use various types of play in developing prosocial behavior among preschool children such as legos and blocks. Based on the findings several recommendations were made such as Bahagian Pendidikan Guru (Department of Teacher Education, Ministry of Education) need to review teaching approaches used in preschools in Institut Perguruan Malaysia in particular and in Malaysian preschools in general in order to increase the awareness among teachers in promoting play as a central role in educating young children prosocial behavior. Therefore more efforts must be taken by teachers, policy makers and researchers to promote the use of play in teaching and learning process. Moreover the study has contributed in understanding the implementation of play in developing prosocial behavior among preschool children in Pra sekolah Al Falah, Institut Perguruan Kuala Terengganu.
