Ihdad (mourning among the widow) is part of family matters that had been ignored by muslim society as well as their scholars. Even though the practice of ihdad concerns only on widow, yet the understanding and awareness of it is also important to married women in preparation to face their husband’s death. Therefore, this article discusses the rules which related to Ihdad among the muslim women as well as the understanding of the community on this matter. The article written is aimed to identify the understanding of the muslim women about three main issues interrelated to Ihdad: understanding of the hukum, the period of time given, and things that are prohibited during Ihdad. In collecting data, a set of questionnaire is distributed to 364 muslim women from state electorate of Dungun in Terengganu by stratified random sampling, which constituted the sample of the study. The study has shown that the majority of the respondents understand the hukum of ihdad (54.9 percent) and the period of ihdad (53.6 percent). Nevertheless, it is ironic that the percentage of those who do not understand the hukum and period of ihdad are much less the same. Meanwhile the understanding of the prohibitions is at a high level. Besides that, the results also revealed that the level of understanding is not significantly related to the demographic factors, specifically, a person’s educational streaming.
