Abstract

ABSTRACT This research is a descriptive and evaluative study of the teaching of Arabic Rhetoric (Balaghah) at the STPM level in the National Religious Secondary Schools (SMKA). The aims of this study are to evaluate the teaching of Arabic Rhetoric at the STPM level in the schools and to identify problems encountered in the implementation of the programme. To achieve these aims, three instruments were used: document analysis, classroom observation and questionnaires. The analyzed documents were the STPM Arabic Language Syllabus 1999, the text book "al-Murshid fi cilm al-Balaghah" and the STPM Balaghah question papers for years 2000 and 2001. The sample for classroom observation consisted of 11 teachers and 228 students from 10 National Religious Secondary Schools in 5 states. Whereas, the sample for questionnaires involved 22 teachers and 260 students from 20 National Religious Secondary Schools in 10 states. The findings of this study indicate that the teaching of Arabic Rhetoric at the STPM level in the National Religious Secondary Schools is not compatible with theories of teaching Arabic Rhetoric and the implementation of the programme does not lead to the achievement of the goals and objectives stated in the syllabus. This study also found that the teaching of Arabic Rhetoric at the STPM level in the National Religious Secondary Schools has faced various problems encompass aspects related to aims and objectives, syllabus content, teaching materials, teaching methodology and assessment. The findings of this study suggest that there is a need to carry out a comprehensive study in developing appropriate syllabus for Arabic Rhetoric in order to improve the success of teaching Arabic Rhetoric at the STPM level in particular and at other levels in general.
