Abstract

Ficus deltoidea (FD) is a highly potential herbs that pharmacologically proven to possess numerous biological activities. There are at least seven varieties of FD in Peninsular Malaysia. One particular variety, F. deltoidea var. trengganuensis can only be found grow as epiphyte on Bris soil in Terengganu state. In order to evaluate the potential of this variety as compared to other seven more varieties, chemical fingerprinting coupled with multivariate analysis together with the evaluation of biological activities were carried out. In addition, different parts of FD var. trengganuensis from four localities were compared to determine the differences between plant parts. Chemometric analysis of the FTIR data revealed the significant differences between FD var. trengganuensis and other varieties. It clusters together with var. motleyana, var. bilobata, var. kunstleri and var. intermedia. For antioxidant and alpha glucosidase activity, FD var. trengganuensis showed moderate activity. Comparison between plant parts discovered that figs of FD var. trengganuensis have the highest activity compared to leaves and stems. Finding from this study revealed that even though var. trengganuensis was collected from Bris soil, it could produce comparable quality of F. deltoidea and could potentially develop as potent botanical drug.
