Advances in computer and Internet technologies as well as related software applications have great impact on organisations and society. The infrastructures provided by these technologies improve many aspects of organisational activities including the process of evaluation and decision making processes. Decision making is one of manager’s challenging roles. Therefore, the system to support decision making which is called Decision Support System (DSS) deserve special attention by many researchers in this area. The DSS system produced should be able to assist managers especially at management control and strategic planning levels in order to make better decisions. There are many categories of DSS that had been proposed and each of them has its own special characteristics suitable for handling different type of decision making problems. The objective of this paper is to present an overview of DSS frameworks and the comparative strengths of them and their identified application areas. This paper also shows how an existing framework of Information System (IS) at various organisational levels may evolve to become a generic DSS framework for individual or group DMs in standalone or Web-based environment. Finally, a framework of a Model-Driven DSS (MGDSS) suitable to support decision making via the Internet or in distributed environment is presented.
